Abstract: Most cultures require subculture at regular intervals to avoid browning and death. This requires manpower and is expensive. Subculture also increases the risk of contamination and somaclonal variation. Therefore, when cell lines have to be maintained for a long time the subculture frequency should be kept as low as possible. This is achieved by various methods of storage.
