Title: Development of pearl culture in India and scope for a pearl culture industry
Abstract: The first free, spherical cultured pearl of India was produced on July 1973 at the Pearl Culture Laboratory of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute at Veppalodai, near Tuticorin. This marked the development of a technology for producing cultured pearls in the Indian pearl oyster Pinctada fucata. Subsequently, several pearls of different sizes and colours have been produced by
culture technology. In a series of recent communications, the results of these experiments have been discussed (Alagarswami, 1974; Alagarswami and Qasim 1974a, b; Velu, Alagarswami and Qasim, 1974)
