Title: A cut above : customising a curriculum for excellence in skills development
Abstract: During 2003 UK Skills, an independent organisation that supports skills and learning for work through competitions, awards and events, and the Learning and Skills Development Agency (LSDA) conducted research into how teaching and learning approaches can help learners to develop their technical and personal skills and support the development of excellence in the vocational curriculum. The research extends the scope of an earlier project (report indexed at TD/TNC 73.549) by increasing the number of participating centres and range of learners, expanding the range of vocational sectors, the types of programs and modes of learning involved, testing and evaluating approaches to enhancing the vocational curriculum in a larger number of colleges and a wider range of vocational learning programs, reviewing and evaluating the costs and benefits of the enhanced curriculum, and considering strategies for the further dissemination and implementation of the curriculum enhancements. This report provides information on the findings and conclusions emerging from this research. The role of teachers, matching teaching strategies to learning needs, and the need for good planning are highlighted as key to helping learners achieve high standards.
