Title: Meeting BPT standards for intermediate and secondary refinery waste water treatment
Abstract: A discussion of best practicable technology (BPT) for treatment of refinery waste waters, covering intermediate and secondary treatments used in the U.S. which satisfy the requirements of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, showed that dissolved air flotation is commonly used to enhance oil and suspended solids removal, generally preceded by a gravity oil separator. Reactor-clarifiers are used to remove suspended and colloidal pollutants by coagulation and precipitation. After equalization, the secondary biological treatment is, in most cases, a high-rate, continuous activated-sludge process. The design of the equipment for these processes is discussed, and a filtration step for effluent polishing is briefly described.
