Title: A digital library system for easy creation/manipulation of new documents from existing resources
Abstract: We take a stance that a digital library is not just a collection of documents from which users can retrieve documents for their needs, but a facility in which new knowledge can be created from existing resources and stored for later use. In an effort to support this more active role of a digital library, we have introduced a new document architecture where links play a key role in helping users create new knowledge in the form of a composite document, called a virtual document. In this paper, we describe a digital library system that allows users to create, store, and retrieve virtual documents with explicit use of various links.
