Abstract: In Persian, the concept of auxiliary is that of a highly grammaticalised verb functionning as dependent of the main verb. Auxiliaries are characteristically used to mark tense, aspect, mood and voice. They have lost main verb features and become dependents of the main verb. The primary purpose of his paper is to examine the semantics of Persian modal auxiliaries, considering them in the light of comparable verbs in English. Before discussing the semantic features of modal auxiliaries in Persian, it will be helpful to discuss dimensions of modality in English with drawing on Palmer (1990)
