Title: Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
Abstract: Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is a globally applied strategy for dealing with crime and the fear of crime by designing out elements in the environment that provide opportunities for criminal events to occur. With a developmental history stretching back to the early 1960s in the United States, CPTED has changed from a limited approach based on environmental determinism to one that acknowledges the role of social factors in crime. While its limitations stem from a lack of conceptual and definitional clarity, it has nevertheless proved to be a popular approach to crime prevention. However, its greatest benefit lies in being part of a wider strategy of dealing with crime in communities.
