Abstract: The chapter has emphasised the importance of individual travel statistics as a vital tool in the planning and policy making activities at the state level. It has reviewed the changing needs of government authorities over past decades and pointed to the increased significance of the data available from rigorous surveys of individual travel behaviour. An example of one such survey, the 1981 Sydney travel survey has been used to illustrate a carefully executed survey and the usefulness of the results which it can give. It is concluded that the household survey must be the basis for planning at the state level, even though other measures of individual travel behaviour will continue to be important supplements.
