Abstract: This article reports that since June of 1984, the Cool Water Coal Gasification facility near Barstow, California, in the Mojave Desert, has successfully employed a fully integrated combined-cycle system to generate electric power. Production at the 117-megawatt plant has been comparable to that of conventional facilities, confirming the commercial viability of the coal gasification process in full-scale service. In fact, the Cool Water Program has been so successful that it has received the 1987 Energy Resources Technology Award from ASME.
