Title: Folio of compositions and critical commentary
Abstract: This PhD in composition comprises a folio of seven works ranging from solo andchamber works to pieces for small and large orchestra, together with a CriticalCommentary. The folio includes a flute solo, a work for clarinet, viola, 'cello andpiano, an a cappella work for double choir, a symphonic sketch for smallorchestra, two concerti, and a song cycle for SATB choir and orchestra. The folioalso includes a recording of each of the works to assist in score reading. This body of works is unified by the use of similar organisational techniques. They each develop methods of pitch organisation primarily through an individualapplication of the 12 note method or through other types of rows. Coupled withthis is an exploration in various contexts of balance within formal structures, most frequently through the use of the Golden Mean. My expectation is that 1 willcontinue to explore these techniques in subsequent works, together with theexploration of new ideas. The Critical Commentary discusses not only the origins of these techniques withinthe context of my compositions, but also provides a detailed analysis of each of theworks both harmonically, structurally and, where applicable, programmatically.
