Title: Уровни художественной символики в прозе А. П. Чехова
Abstract: The symbolic background is a striking feature of A. P. Chekhov's prose of 1885-1903. The symbolic plan of his works can be seen on different levels: symbolic collective images of characters, symbolic motives, symbols of space and time, symbolism of landscape, symbolic events, actions, situations, certain symbolic details. Each of the symbols in the system of the mentioned levels is polysemantic and multifunctional. Symbolical images may have different functions at a time: characteristic, psychological, topic-making, evaluative-critical and analytical. Among numerous symbolic levels, the writer knowingly marks out the main symbol that is directly connected to the artistic conception of a personage. As a rule the dominant symbolic level is shown in the title of a work. All symbolic levels are united into the interrelated artistic system around the main symbol. The complex symbolic background of Chekhov's prose causes such famous features of artistic method of the writer as an open denouement, subtext, and refusal from declaring a norm of people's life.
