Abstract: The high cost of fuel takes up a large portion of the budgets of Class I railroads. The railroads are working to reduce the cost of fuel through technology and education. Railroad employees are being trained for more effective fuel management using simulators to better understand train handling. Railroads have also been providing incentives for locomotive engineers’ fuel handling skills. Trains with higher fuel efficiency are being introduced, along with devices that can improve fuel conservation.
