Abstract: This chapter focused on the manner in which genes and elements of the immune system interact to shape the final results during growth and development in livestock. The heritability of growth and growth-related parameters as well as those conditions in which gene action has impaired growth was also discussed. Topics include: heritability of growth and growth related traits, selection differential, generation interval and genetic gain, repeatability and breeding value, hybrid vigour, undesirable genetic effects on growth and related traits, breeds, and the biochemical and physiological consideration of gene action in growth.
