Title: ENERGY CONSERVATION AND VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE
Abstract: One of the most important functions of buildings has been providing bioclimatically comfortable indoor spaces to the users throughout history. In vernacular architecture designs were made to achieve this goal without using much energy. In the 20th Century man started to think of comfort as a product of energy consumption whereas building components, walls, windows, shutters, balconies, verandahs, courtyards, roots were used effectively as means of achieving comfort. This study summarizes the use of building elements to achieve comfort as well as the theory behind design decisions, coordination with life styles in examples of vernacular architecture in Turkey.
