Abstract: Many roadways in the United States do not take pedestrian safety into account. There are measures being developed, however, that can improve safety for pedestrians, such as rectangular rapid flashing beacons. This system catches drivers’ attention well before they reach the crosswalk. Another system is the High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK), which uses both pedestrian guidance and traffic warnings at marked crosswalks away from intersections. The systems are low-cost and pedestrian activated.
