Title: Using sun's heat as fuel for 20 to 30-kW gensets
Abstract: A DOE sponsored demonstration program is described in which (between 1982 and 1985) a number of solar thermal power modules will be developed. Recuperated gas turbines with modified combustors designed to operate using concentrated thermal energy of focused solar rays are described and discussed. When necessary, backup power will be natural gas or propane. The solar collectors will be tracking parabolic dishes. A 20-kW gas turbine genset operating at 1500 to 1700/sup 0/F and a 30-kW sized module operating at 2000 to 2100/sup 0/F are planned. Applications are for municipal and military uses. Cited are process heat installations, water desalinization, agricultural uses, and design of systems for production of fuels and chemicals. The current status of the program is described as well as the equipment being developed. Collector, receiver, and generator are discussed as well as the efficiency of the overall system (25 to 35%).
