Title: Biomarkers of toxicity for dietary ingredients contained in dietary supplements
Abstract: Dietary supplements in the US are an FDA-regulated commodity that approximately half of the country uses on a daily basis. Reports in the literature suggest that use of certain dietary supplement products and ingredients, specifically those with a known or even a predictable pharmacological activity, can directly lead to problems. FDA also observes issues in the marketplace that contribute or potentially compound these problems. This chapter reviews the pharmacology and toxicities described in the literature for dietary ingredients and FDA’s actions associated with their use, when to anticipate problems with such ingredients/supplements, and how the science informs FDA regulatory decisions with respect to FDA’s regulatory tools for dietary supplements. The main goal of this chapter is to address the markers and mechanisms of harms associated with, or directly caused by, dietary supplements and ingredients with pronounced pharmacological activity or toxicity.
