Abstract: This article discusses the extent of groundwater resources in the U.S., and divides the country's groundwater into five major groundwater provinces, with four provinces extending more or less in a north‐south direction, and a fifth province cutting across the northerly boundaries of the other four. Topics covered include: differences in utilization; variations in temperature; salinity; contamination by wastes; depletion; mining of groundwater; and, utilization schedules.
