Title: HIGH-TEMPERATURE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF URANIUM CARBIDE AND BERYLLIUM OXIDE
Abstract: The high-temperature flow characteristics of polycrystalline U carbide and Be oxide are compared and discussed with regard to the possible importance of crystal structure, stoichiometry, and purity of the materiala. The mechanism of flow for polycrystalline U carbide (and Ti carbide) is that of the climb of dislocations. The flow behavior of fine-grained polycrystalline Be oxide (and Al oxide) is at present not entirely understood but may possibly be controlled by a diffusional mecharism. The current status of the preparation of high-purity U carbide and Be oxide is described. (TCO)
