Abstract: This is the subject of A.187–199. There are thus twice as many problems as in the corresponding section on addition; for now both minuend and subtrahend will also contain integers. We find examples where a fraction is diminished by a fraction (A.187–188), by a compound fraction (A.189), and by different fractions (A.192, with a proof); a fraction of a fraction is diminished by a fraction of a fraction (A.196); a compound fraction is diminished by a compound fraction (A.190). Problems involving integers are: an integer and a fraction diminished by a fraction (A.193), by a fraction of a fraction (A.197), by a compound fraction (A.195), by an integer and a fraction (A.194; with a proof), and by different fractions (A.199); finally, we find the cases of an integer and a compound fraction minus a compound fraction (A.191) or minus an integer and a compound fraction (A.198). Considering the list at the beginning of A–III, not included are two combinations for pure fractional expressions, while only 6 cases out of 21 involving integers in the fractional expressions are treated.
