Title: Rating system for threatened and endangered species of wildlife
Abstract: Described is a rating system drafted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Office of Endangered species for systematically determining the relative status of native wildlife species. A wildlife species is given a numerical ranking according to the extent to which it is threatened, the regional uniqueness of the species, and the social, economic, and ecological significance of the animal. An application of the rating system to 209 wildlife species in New York State is reported. When considered in conjunction with the required actions and estimated costs of an effective management effort, this rating system can be the basis for developing a comprehensive and effective endangered species program.
