Abstract: A new osmium isotope was found by irradiation of platinum with fast neutrons. The osmium activities produced were separated from the mixture by distilling osmium tetroxide twice. In this fraction an activity of 6.5 min. half life could be attributed to the so far unknown Os/sup 195/. It was produced by the following reaction: Pt/sup 198/(N, alpha )Os/sup 195/. The maximum BETA energy was determined by a Feather analysis and found to be 2 Mev. It was easy to identify this new osmium isotope since it decays to the well known Ir/sup 195/ (2.2 hr half life). The genetic relationship was proved by Ir separation at equal and known intervals from the osmium fraction. F. D. S. Butement and A. J. Poe's values for Ir/sup 195/ and Os/sup 193/ could be confirmed. (auth)
