Title: Cities of India: Functional and Locational Aspects
Abstract: The 1961 Census of India contains detailed data on the economic activity of the working population for each city, town and village. These data for 250 urban centers (each containing a population of 50 thousand or more) have been used in this paper to identify and characterize the economic base of the cities, and to throw light on the location of industries among the cities under consideration. Some statistical indices have been used in the analysis. An attempt was made to reduce the "Industry Divisions" adopted by the 1961 Census into fundamental sets of industries, or "industrial complexes." However, there does not seem to be any significant correlations between Industry Divisions. Most of the data are presented in tabular form.
