Title: Autonomic Nervous System and Anesthetic Management
Abstract: The body has a voluntary and an involuntary nervous system. The voluntary nervous system is controlled through the cerebal cortex by conscious commands, while the involuntary nervous system exerts its actions through the hypothalmus and other reflex mechanisms. The involuntary or autonomic nervous system provides homeostasis for the body, consisting of the sympathetic nervous system that prepares the body for stress while the parasympathetic nervous system prevents the overreaction of the sympathetic nervous system. This review discusses the neural transmitters of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, and some drugs which modify the actions or interactions of these neurotransmitters. This information will also provide the foundation for discussion by other lecturers of this postgraduate course.
