Abstract: Sentence combining is described by Stephen Koziol as one of the most exciting instructional strategies to have 'emerged' during the past decade.' Reports of early sentence combining studies clearly aroused high hopes, suggesting as they did that sentence-combining instruction resulted not only in increases in syntactic fluency in writing, but in improved quality as well.2 The numbers of teachers from elementary school through college who flock to sentence-combining sessions at professional conferences provide clear evidence of teacher interest. The influence of sentence-combining research is to be noted also in recommendations to teachers in methods texts and in the kinds of practice exercises being included in recently published grammar
