The chapter provides an overview of the different Windows and UNIX/Linux authentication integration solutions currently available on the IT market.It focuses on the Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 and R2 platforms, all of which are running in an AD-centric environment Microsoft included important UNIX/Linux integration changes in the Windows Server 2003 R2 OS. Regarding UNIX, the most common UNIX and Linux flavors in use today are covered: HP-UX, Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, and Redhat and Novell Suse Linux. The chapter begins by comparing Windows and UNIX/Linux authentication. For example, Windows uses security identifiers (SIDs) for uniquely identifying security principals; UNIX/ Linux typically uses user identifiers (UIDs) and group identifiers (GIDs). It then details the interoperability enabling technologies that includes the Lightweight Directory Integration Protocol (LDAP) and Kerberos. The tight integration between LDAP and Kerberos is an important differentiator of the commercial UNIX/Linux-Windows integration solutions from Quest Software (Vintela) and Centrify.UNIX/ Linux also features some typical security related concepts like the pluggable authentication module (PAM), which provides a framework to make different authentication technologies available for UNIX/ Linux platforms; naming services that are repositories to stores different types of information; the naming service switch (NSS), a client-side technology; local files; the Network Information Service, which Sun initially referred to as the Yellow Pages; NIS+, NIS and LDAP integration; and SAMBA, a collection of software that provides services to UNIX and Linux platforms.
