Abstract: In this article, body image is conceptualized as both self-perceived attractiveness and perceptions regarding one’s own genitals. Sexual functioning is conceptualized as both overall sexual experience and the degree to which the individual functions satisfactorily within a particular sexual interaction with a partner, including negotiation of safer sexual activities. The limited research on the intersection of these concepts has been based most often on heterosexual college student participants in the United States, leaving many important questions unanswered. In addition to drawing conclusions based on review of the existing research, important directions for future research are considered.
