Abstract: This chapter is studies the second principle of socially responsible information technology management—that is, to fairly compensate IT workers. Establishing a fair compensation plan for information technology (IT) employees can mitigate turnover and the loss of key personnel. Reduced turnover can also help keep projects on schedule, because work will not be disrupted when a staff member leaves and replacements must be recruited and brought up to speed on a project. Computer Economics has identified several significant challenges that managers face when establishing fair compensation plans for IT professionals, some of these are: assuring equal pay regardless of gender and IT departments may gain more than they think they save by compensating women equally with men; providing adequate compensation for overtime and holiday hours; adequately compensating employees for on-call time, which may very well not cost as much as recruiting and training new staff because of high turnover rates; appropriately linking compensation to performance it is beneficial to both the employee and the IT department to conduct structured performance evaluations; and developing competitive compensation plans.
