Title: The Peripheral Mechanisms of Sensitization of Inflamed Tissues
Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter presents the peripheral mechanisms of sensitization of inflamed tissues. Responses of the cutaneous mechanoreceptors to tactile stimulation of the inflamed area of the skin are studied in acute experiments on cats and dogs, using the collision technique. The development of the inflammation is accompanied by the marked sensitization, decrease in the rate of adaptation, and by the considerable prolongation of after-discharges in the receptors with non-medullated afferent fibres. These receptors are in all likelihood the polymodal nociceptors. Reactions of mechanoreceptors with medullated afferent fibres are unchanged. It is assumed that sensitization of the polymodal nociceptors is one cause of the hyperalgesia of the inflamed tissues.
