Title: TOOLS FOR MAINTAINING THE MOBILITY OF OLDER PEOPLE
Abstract: Transit operators have an essential role to play in maintaining the mobility of older people, but they will not be able to meet this challenge alone. To keep older people mobile, transit operators, cities, counties, community organizations, and planning agencies will need to work together in a sustained, continuing, and cooperative fashion. Tools are needed to help all of these entities. Recent work in the San Francisco Bay Area illustrates a variety of such tools. A lot of this work was sponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), as part of its Older Adults Transportation Study (OATS). Additional work was done by Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates in projects for the City of Concord, California, and the Solano Transportation Authority. This paper describes the results of three projects that provide useful advocacy and planning tools. First, the Mobility Toolkit includes numerous examples of practical, successful actions to enhance senior mobility. Some of them involve direct action by transit operators, while others involve action by others, often in partnership with transit operators. Second, a geographic analysis at the regional level from OATS helps make the case for expanding transit services, but also shows why other actions, such as those featured in the Senior Mobility Toolkit, are needed. Third, an example from a local planning project shows how a geographic analysis on a local level can be used to help promote action.
