Title: FREIGHT VILLAGES AND COMPARABLE INITIATIVES: RELEVANCE FOR URBAN TRANSPORT
Abstract: The European Commission has made intermodal transport (IT) a focal point of its recent policy decisions as IT is considered more sustainable than highway transport. In urban transport, IT plays a very limited role; network performance and logistic requirements of shippers, receivers, and transport companies are not properly linked with each other. A key issue is insufficient access to intermodal facilities and networks, which involves integrating transport and land use policy. This paper investigates the intermodal potential of freight villages and their role as gateways to cities. Reasons behind their development and sustainability potential are discussed, while these alternatives are compared to find commonalities and differences. Recommendations for further study are provided.
