Title: Optimization of Bio Methane Production Using Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Food Waste and Banana Stems: Synergetic Effect, Mass Balance, and Process Efficiency
Abstract: Anaerobic co-digestion was attributed to a higher yield of biogas due to the synergistic effect of the sole substrate combination. The purpose of this study was to characterize and examine the biogas production potential of food waste and banana stems. Lab-scale experimental study designs were employed for biogas production using five ratios of replication for 45 days of hydraulic retention time at 37+1oC. The water displacement method was used to measure the daily biogas yield from anaerobic batch reactors. Furthermore, the optimization of optimal operational conditions for anaerobic co-digestion was investigated by utilizing Box Behnken Design through Response Surface Methodology of design expert statistical tools. The carbohydrate and protein contents of food waste were 50.72% and 9.81% respectively. Correspondingly, the banana stem comprises 29.03% cellulose and 8.53% lignin, respectively. The high carbohydrate content of food waste and low lignin content of banana stems indicate the potential of substrates for biogas production, and the co-digestion scenario attributed to enhanced methanogenic activity due to a well-balanced C/N ratio. The longer and shorter retention times for cumulative biogas production were observed in R1 (100%BS) of 41 days, and R5 (100%FW) of 25 days of the sole substrate-containing reactors of banana stem and food waste respectively. The biogas production potential of food waste, banana stem, and the co-digestion in 1:1ratio of the combination were 304.90mL/gVS, 216.60mL/gVS, and 330.18mL/gVS respectively. Therefore, the co-digestion provides better yield due to well-balanced nutrients and optimum pH created because of positive synergism in mixed substrate-containing reactors for an efficient AD process.
