Abstract: Abstract Within this chapter, we provide an overview of the science and practice of clinical neuropsychology as it relates to persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Consistent with the diagnostic focus of this section, we explain the relevance of neuropsychological assessment in clinical and research settings that concentrate on the neurobehavioral complications of HIV and AIDS. Several different approaches to neuropsychological assessment are then described, including a review of the relative strengths and limitations of extended, focused, and screening test batteries. Next, we review the impact of HIV disease variables (e.g. viral load), demographic characteristics (e.g. age and education), and co-morbid conditions (e.g. substance use disorders) on neuropsychological test performance.
