Title: The Sociology of Followers: Collective Followership
Abstract: Followership is a vital part of leadership. Followers bring an individual understanding and identity into the relationship with leaders, but they are also shaped and influenced by their collective identity. From the family they are born into to the hobbies they choose and the generation they are a part of—all these collective identities impact their understanding of leadership’s definition, role, tasks, and purpose. The Christian follower has a unique relationship with Christ but is also a collective follower in many ways, whether as a part of a church family, a specific denomination, or simply as a member of the living, global body of Christ. The collective identity of followers, whether within the body of Christ or without, profoundly impacts the dynamics of the leader/follower relationship and is therefore worth considering.
