Title: Authoritarianism and the Persistence of Corruption Since the Arab Spring Uprisings
Abstract: Authoritarianism and corruption are inextricably linked, and each is a function of both internal and external factors. While the external support for the ruling elites in the Arab world cannot be under-estimated, the internal factors having to do with co-optation, repression, and reforms in the aftermath of the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings merit special attention. This article attempts to unpack the dynamic interaction of internal and external variables leading to political uncertainty, economic insecurity and corruption on the one hand and revived authoritarianism on the other. Despite broadly positive attitudes toward democracy, some Arab countries have reverted to identity-sectarian politics, making the maintenance of the old authoritarian institutions central to the preservation of order and stability.
