Abstract: A total of 201 patients with a recent arthritis of unknown aetiology and fulfilling at least one of the ARA diagnostic criteria for RA were followed for 8 years. The patients were divided in three groups by using two parameters: seropositive arthritis, seronegative oligoarthritis and seronegative polyarthritis. At the follow-up study, a striking difference in the outcome between patients with seropositive arthritis and seronegative oligoarthritis was seen.We propose that, in analog to the juvenile oligoarthritis, the concept of adult seronegative oligoarthritis should be considered for general use. It is supported by the simplicity of the definition and by the uniformly good long-term outcome.
