Abstract: In this chapter, I will firstly discuss the ontological situation types proposed by Vendler (Philos Rev 143–160, 1957). and then give a detailed description of how situation aspect and viewpoint aspect are combined to form different linguistic event types (abb. event types). I suggest that linguistic events form the complete aspectual meaning of sentences and linguistic event types are universal across languages. In this chapter, I will discuss the properties of different linguistic event types. Tests will be provided to discriminate different linguistic event types. Finally, various linguistic constructions in Chinese including RVCs and SVCs will be dicussed in terms of the possible linguistic event types they can denote.
