Title: Performance estimation for the automotive air-conditioning system.
Abstract: The model of the air-conditioning system for electric vehicle has been developed in this paper. The air conditioning system includes a compressor, a condenser, an expansion valve, and an evaporator. Unlike the traditional system in which the compressor is driven by the engine, the compressor in this paper is driven by a motor which can run independently of the vehicle speed. Two levels of parameters for system design and operation are considered. The first level is the control variables to set the operating point of the system, including the compressor speed, the fan speed, and the blower speed The second level is the outside conditions that determine the air-condition load of the system, including vehicle speed, environmental temperature, and relative humidity. The simulation was carried out for a mid-size model car with ambient temperature of 35°C and solar intensity of 700W/m2, and the desired cabin temperature is 25°C. It was found that the least fan speed to condense all refrigerant is 5 m/sec. When the vehicle is over 36 km/hr, the condenser capacity is enough such that no external fan is required. The least blower flow rate to have superheat of 5°C is 0.37m3/s, raising the flow rate would increase the refrigeration capacity. A control algorithm is required to match the compressor speed, the blower speed, and the thermal load.
