Abstract: Since 2008, General Architecture Collaborative (GAC), a nonprofit design and advocacy firm, has been working with neighborhood, municipal, academic, and industry partners in Rwanda. This chapter aims to make architecture accessible to those who are traditionally excluded from decision-making processes that affect their built environment. GAC receives donations from industrialized countries and works with local representatives and organizations to identify the optimum ways to invest in their communities. The health center uses its open spaces for community gardens and incorporates a demonstration kitchen to run workshops on healthy eating and preventive care, coordinated by nutrition advisers from another NGO, Gardens for Health International. GAC's interface role is necessitated by the unique building culture of the international development industry context. In 2015, GAC organized two forums that brought together rural residents, religious leaders, academics, international development workers, and government workers.
