Title: The Impeachment Process - Why Did He Survive?
Abstract: Underpinned by the foundation of the United States Constitution, the Congress performs the sole power of impeachment. The impeachment process demonstrates the act of charging and trying an official of the federal government for having committed “Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors”.
Due to its innately political structure as well as absence of an established definition of “High Crimes and Misdemeanors”, the impeachment process whenever exercised evokes discussions whether the offenses constitute impeachable violations. With this in mind, the impeachment process poses an intriguing research field.
The aim of this study is to illustrate the phenomena of the impeachment process and to highlight the factors exerting influence over its outcome. By employing the Hypothetico-deductive method, this study investigates the impeachment process carried out toward the President of the United States Donald J. Trump and explores the causes to his acquittal. By having the ‘Economic Voting and Elected Incumbent Candidacy’ as well as ‘Impeachment as a Partisan Political Weapon’ as theoretical point of departure, this study analyzes opinion polls from a range of polling institutes. The findings indicate that the robust economy as well as the perception of the impeachment process as impartial constitute plausible explanations to the acquittal.
