Title: Role of Microbial Biofilms in Wastewater Management
Abstract: Wastewater requires proper treatment to remove pollutants from municipal and industrial effluents before being discharged into the environment. Different physical, chemical, and biological methods have been used worldwide for wastewater treatment. Among biological methods, biofilm-based treatment is the most recent and widely used approach in which a plethora of microorganisms share a common habitat and remove contaminants effectively from wastewater through a coordinated metabolic action. Biofilm mediated wastewater treatment is commonly practiced in various bioreactors. This chapter highlights various treatment technologies with special emphasis on biofilm mediated bioreactors for wastewater management. It also overviews architecture, structure, and formation of biofilms, and various molecular and microscopic techniques for their exhaustive exploration. Overall, this chapter provides insight for the improvement of efficiency and stability of biofilm mediated wastewater treatment technologies.
