Title: Methodological issues encountered in physiotherapy outcomes research: observations based on a multicentre study on the physiotherapy management of stress urinary incontinence in Australia
Abstract: The author investigated the effectiveness of the physiotherapy management of stress urinary incontinence (SUT) applied under clinical conditions by physiotherapists trained in continence management. An observational study design prospectively gathering data from clinicians using common outcome measures was chosen. The outcome measures were applied before the commencement of treatment, at the end of an episode of care and one year after treatment. There are a number of randomised controlled trials on the efficacy of pelvic floor muscle training for stress urinary incontinence, demonstrating that women were cured or improved. However, such trials are conducted under ideal research circumstances (efficacy studies) and may not represent the outcomes of pelvic floor muscle training when provided under usual circumstances of health care practice (effectiveness studies).
