She is a co-investigator on the AHRC-funded project “A History of Women in the British Film and Television Industries, 1933–1989.” She has published articles on gender and British television drama, and is currently writing a book about British female ensemble drama (Manchester University Press, 2021). She is the principal investigator on the four-year AHRC-funded project “British Silent Cinema and the Transition to Sound,” and a founder-director of the British Silent Film Festival, which has been running since 1998. Her main research interest is silent cinema, with a specific focus on women's contributions across the spectrum of the industry, from production to distribution, exhibition, performance, and the technologies of sound. She has published on silent cinema music, cinema and World War I, British silent cinema's transition to sound, and women musicians in silent cinema.
