Abstract: This paper reviews the complex subject of creativity and how to handle creative individuals in the organization effectively, so as to leverage their ideas and help them to feel valued, rather than the all-too common problem of them being seen as difficult or disruptive. To this end, the meaning of creativity in the workplace is examined, both in terms of the organization itself, and for individuals and groups. The pros of creativity are explored, and so are the challenges that exist when creativity is not encouraged. The development of organizational creativity is then explored in depth, looking at the type of culture that is needed to encourage creativity and enhance the abilities of creative people at work. This includes considering areas such as how to optimize group work for creativity as well as the types of language that are used to help people to become more creative and cast aside negative perceptions about putting their ideas forward. It is argued that only through significant and meaningful change to the organization’s culture can creativity really be nurtured and start to flourish.
