Title: Probiotics of the Acidophilus Group: Lactobacillus acidophilus, delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and johnsonii
Abstract: Members of the acidophilus group of lactobacilli, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and johnsonii, have a long-standing, indeed ancient, pedigree in the preparation of fermented dairy products. Additionally, this taxonomically closely related group was the first to be employed, over a century ago, as probiotics in the modern sense. This chapter will discuss recent clinical successes reported predominantly utilizing this group of probiotic bacteria in a wide spectrum of clinical conditions including intestinal and systemic inflammation, hepatic, immunological, metabolic, and gynecological disorders. Of note, the acidophilus group is typically used in yogurt preparations, often supplemented by other probiotic formulations and synbiotics. Thus, specific biological activities and clinical benefits are difficult to assign to this group.
