Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines Shimazaki Tōson's childhood and education during the period 1872–1892. It begins with the birth of Shimazaki Haruki, who later adopted the pen name Tōson, in Magome no Shuku on the seventeenth day of the old second month of 1872. It then provides a background on Tōson's early childhood based on his Osanaki hi (Childhood Days, 1912–1913). It also recounts Tōson's life in Tokyo; his stay with the Yoshimura family as a shosei, or live-in houseboy; his schooling at Meiji Gakuin; his conversion to Christianity with the help of his mentor Kimura Kumaji; and his work in a variety store called Makarazuya. Finally, it discusses some of the major events in Tōson's life during the years 1891–1892, including the publication of his translation of William Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis.
