Title: The Environment and Economic Development: Challenges Raised by Sustainable Development
Abstract: Environmental issues acutely raise questions about the viability of the development model carried out by industrialized countries, its application on a global scale and the impossibility to prioritize environmental issues in poor, developing countries. Some believe that environmental concerns and economic development are incompatible. Others maintain that sustainable development reconciles these two dimensions on the condition that the means of production and consumption are revolutionized through technological advances and collective action. This article addresses the issues of sustainable development, first on a conceptual level, then on a policy level. It also highlights the connections between the environment and economic development using the examples of energy and climate.
