Title: Effect of availability of vitrectomy on treatment outcome of posterior segment penetrating foreign bodies
Abstract: An 18-year retrospective study compared 82 cases of retained intraocular foreign bodies in traumatized eyes before (group 1) and after (group 2) the introduction of vitrectomy at our institution. Functional (visual acuity outcome) and anatomic success rates were compared and were significantly higher in group 2 than in group 1. Our results support the beneficial effect of vitrectomy availability in the treatment of posterior segment intraocular foreign bodies.
