Abstract: The oculomotor nerve (cranial nerve III) provides motor innervation to several extraocular muscles and the levator palpebrae superioris, as well as parasympathetic innervation of the ciliary and the iris sphincter muscles. Abnormalities along the anatomical course of the oculomotor nerve may result in a third nerve palsy. A common and potentially life-threatening cause of oculomotor nerve palsy is an aneurysm of the posterior communicating artery (PComA). Other common etiologies include microvascular ischemia, trauma, tumor, infection, and inflammation.
