Title: Feminist Community Work: the Nature and Contribution of Feminist Campaigns and Networks
Abstract: Feminist campaigns and networks form the basis of feminist community work and as such are an integral part of feminist social work. They have contributed substantially to identifying the gender implications of social problems in the way described in the previous chapter. We will turn to analysing them as a form of practice and draw out their significance for feminist social work as a whole. In doing so, we will examine the significance of the forms feminist campaigns and networks take, how they promote welfare, and how their efforts in this respect need to be underwritten by other feminist initiatives in order to reach their full potential and have an enduring effect. The material involved in our account comes from our experience of organisation, contact and discussion with women in a range of groups, and a reading of secondary sources. We examine the fine detail of the experiences and interactions involved, in the hope that such an exercise will be useful to other feminist activists 'caught' in equally demanding situations.
